Drilling crews primarily use drill cuttings boxes during offshore drilling operations to transport waste drilling fluid and cuttings to shore. Due to the limited crane loads on early drilling rigs, cuttings boxes were a simple method for collection and transportation. Crews typically placed these boxes near solids control equipment, which allowed for shorter travel times and easier loading. When a box was full, crews removed it and replaced it with an empty one. Once the specified number of boxes was filled, they were transported back to shore by workboat. Upon return, the workboat would retrieve the empty boxes from the dock.
Drilling cuttings boxes are similar with the sea shipment container but better sealed with smaller dimension and volume. The manufacturer will fabricate a lot of cuttings containers with the same size and general frame to allow for convenient transportation and storage. Drilling crews can use them on both onshore and offshore platforms. It holds high flexibility on certain size with custom built service.

Cuttings boxes generally come in two sizes: 25bbl and 15bbl. A 25bbl box weighs up to 15 tons when fully filled, especially when using high-density drilling fluid. Manufacturers design a 15bbl box for use when a crane cannot lift a larger one. When fully filled, a 15bbl box weighs 7-10 tons. Crews can stack empty cuttings boxes two on top of each other, but not when fully loaded. For larger operations, crews require three or more boxes per set of 25-30 cuttings boxes. The drilling site must accommodate all the cuttings boxes.
