Installation Requirements for Mission Pump Couplings in Oil Fields

Proper installation and alignment of couplings for Mission centrifugal pumps (such as the Magnum, Sandmaster, and 2500 Supreme series) are critical in oilfield applications. These pumps are widely used for drilling fluid transfer, including mud circulation and solids control systems. Misalignment can lead to excessive vibration, premature bearing failure, seal damage, and reduced pump life. Following industry best practices ensures reliable performance and longevity.

Key Alignment Methods

  1. Preliminary Visual Check (Straight Edge Method) Use a steel ruler or straight edge placed across the coupling halves in multiple positions (top, bottom, left, and right). Visually inspect for parallelism: the ruler should make close contact with the outer rims of both coupling halves with no visible light gap. This confirms that the coupling rims are in a straight line, indicating good parallel (offset) alignment.
  2. Precision Alignment (Dial Indicator Method) For accurate coaxiality between the motor shaft and pump shaft:
    • Mount a dial indicator with a special magnetic base or fixture.
    • Perform reverse dial indicator or rim-and-face measurements to check both angular and parallel misalignment.
    • Recommended tolerances:
      • Offset misalignment: ≤ 0.010 inches (0.25 mm) Total Indicator Reading (TIR).
      • Angular misalignment: Limited to manufacturer specifications, often ≤ 0.002 inches per inch of spacer length.
    • Rotate both shafts together and adjust shims or motor position until readings are within tolerance.

Additional Installation Best Practices

  • Secure the baseplate and tighten all mounting bolts before attempting alignment.
  • Ensure the pump and driver (motor) are level and grouted if required.
  • Avoid forcing the coupling; use proper tools for hub installation.
  • Install coupling guards for safety after final alignment.
  • For high-speed or critical applications, consider API 610/671 standards for special-purpose couplings.

Adhering to these procedures minimizes downtime and enhances equipment reliability in demanding oilfield environments.
