Common Faults of Shear Pumps

Shear pumps provide high shear efficiency and function as solids control equipment for polymer dilution and hydration. High molecular weight polymers used in slurries are high, making them difficult to hydrate if added directly. Therefore, pre-shearing is required. Shear pumps offer high displacement and head, meeting the requirements of slurry preparation and processing.

1. Packing Seal Problems in Shear Pumps:

Fault: Severe packing seal leakage, severe packing wear, and wear on the sleeve surface.

Solution: Remove the packing, bend a thin wire 90 degrees, and run it along the sleeve wall. If deep grooves are detected, replace the sleeve. Overtightening of the packing gland is causing severe packing wear.

2. Polyurethane Problems in Shear Pumps:

Fault: Severe oil seal wear is causing leakage.

Solution: Replace the polyurethane oil seal. Generally, you should replace the polyurethane oil seal and sleeve at the shaft seal after three to six months of operation.

3. Burned Packing in Shear Pumps:

Cause: Overtightening of the packing gland is causing overheating.

Solution: Replace the packing. Do not overtighten the gland.

4. Abnormal rotation of the shear pump impeller or expeller:

Cause: Small clearance between the back of the impeller and the guard plate, or between the expeller, guard plate, and stuffing box.

Solution: Adjust the clearance using bolts and nuts. After adjustment, manually rotate the shaft. There should be no sticking or grinding noises, and the shaft should rotate smoothly.
