At Xi’an HL Petroleum Equipment Co., Ltd., we specialize in high-quality solids control equipment designed to optimize drilling operations. One of our core products is the drilling mud agitator (also known as a mud tank agitator), a reliable and efficient device used in drilling fluid tanks to maintain uniform mud properties and prevent solid particle settlement.
What is a Mud Agitator?
A mud agitator is a key piece of solids control equipment installed on mud tanks during oil and gas drilling, geothermal projects, HDD (horizontal directional drilling), and other applications. It continuously stirs and mixes the drilling fluid (mud) to keep solid particles—such as cuttings, clay, and weighting agents—suspended, ensuring consistent density, viscosity, and overall performance. This prevents sedimentation at the tank bottom, reduces the risk of equipment issues like pump cavitation or blockages, and supports safe, efficient drilling.
Our mud agitators feature high stirring intensity, a wide effective range, low starting resistance, and easy maintenance, making them ideal for harsh field conditions.

Key Components of a Drilling Mud Agitator
The structure of a typical mud agitator from HL Petroleum includes the following main components:
- Explosion-Proof Motor — Provides reliable power in hazardous environments. It is horizontally mounted for convenient installation, adjustment, and replacement. The motor connects to the reducer via an elastic or rigid coupling.
- Reducer (Gearbox) — Reduces motor speed while delivering high torque. Common types include turbine worm gear, helical bevel gear, or other configurations for stable, low-noise operation with excellent transmission efficiency.
- Base (Mounting Skid/Frame) — Ensures stable installation on the mud tank top. It supports the motor and reducer assembly, maintaining alignment and reducing vibration.
- Impeller Assembly (including Shaft and Blades) — The impeller shaft extends into the tank, with welded blades (typically four per layer, single or double-layer depending on power). The blades generate strong vortex flow for effective mixing. A stabilizing tray (or disc) between blades prevents sludge buildup around lower blades during shutdowns, minimizing startup torque and protecting the motor from overload.
Connections between the motor-reducer and reducer-impeller shaft use couplings for smooth power transfer. Shaft length, impeller diameter, and blade configuration are customizable based on tank dimensions, mud weight, and specific requirements.

Advantages of HL Petroleum Mud Agitators
