What is a rig mat used for?

A drilling rig mat is a ground protection device used in heavy-duty operations such as oil drilling. Its main functions are to provide stable support, prevent ground subsidence, and protect the underlying soil or ground structure.

Core Functions

Stable Support: On soft, wet, or unstable ground (such as swamps or mud), it distributes the weight of the drilling rig using steel, wood, or rubber materials, preventing equipment sinking or ground collapse.

Ground Protection: Reduces direct pressure from heavy equipment on the soil, lowering the risk of ground damage, especially suitable for complex terrains such as oil fields and construction sites.

Materials and Design

Materials: Commonly made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polyurethane, or rubber, combining pressure resistance, wear resistance, and anti-slip properties.

Structure: Some products adopt a modular design for easy quick assembly and transportation, adapting to different operating environments.

Application Scenarios

Oil Drilling: Protects the ground beneath the drilling rig from mud erosion and equipment slippage.

Construction Applications: Used in construction sites, mining operations, and other locations requiring heavy equipment.

Applications of Drill Rig Mats

Drilling personnel use drill rig mats as foundations for various drilling equipment in well sites, including derrick bases, mud pumps, purification tanks, power generation rooms, SRC rooms, oil tanks, and water tanks, to ensure the stability of drilling equipment during long-term placement. Drill rig mats are suitable for various drilling rigs such as ZJ20, ZJ30, ZJ40, ZJ50, and ZJ70 in different areas including plains, plateaus, deserts, hills, beaches, and swamps, with drilling depths ranging from 1000-7000m. Drill rig mats replace traditional concrete foundations, significantly reducing drilling costs, improving economic efficiency, saving land, and enhancing on-site management.

Optimizing Drill Rig Pad Usage on Varied Surfaces

Drill rig mats are highly adaptable and exceptionally well-suited for various surface types, especially soft soil. They are designed for direct ground surface deployment.

The large contact area of the drill rig pad significantly reduces the required foundation standards. To ensure safe and stable operation, the ground foundation must meet the following minimal criteria:

  • Foundation Bearing Capacity: $\geq 0.06 \text{ MPa}$
  • Foundation Surface Flatness: $\leq 40 \text{ mm}$

Key Preparation Step

Before positioning any equipment onto the drill rig pads, ensure the foundation surface (whether it be steel, wood, or the ground itself) is free of debris. Cleaning the surface is crucial to prevent unstable equipment placement and ensure maximum contact.
